Welcome to the JFKU 2011 Art & Symbolic Process web page... A note to visitors to the page: The postings on individual pages are put there by the students in this year's "Art & Symbolic Process" seminar, held each Spring as an integral part of the Arts & Consciousness MA and MFA programs at J.F.K.U. in Berkeley. These pages are a form of dialogue and engagement between students in the seminar, as they create intensively with the symbol they have chosen to work with for the quarter-long process. Check out "About Art & Symbolic Process" to get an overview of what symbolic process is all about... This investigates the first moment of consciousness, (the burst of light), the first point of awareness, and the forms that grow out of that point, as represented by developing geometric shapes (each of which represents a particular flavor and vibration of consciousness). Utilizing geometry as a form of mapping the essence of universal patterns is an ancient practice, found in spiritual traditions world-wide. This particular painting is based on the diagram below. In making it, my body, my psyche, my intellect, all interacted with the geometry, studied it, engaged in many "aha" moments while drawing out and painting it. It's absolutely necessary to create the geometry ourselves, if we desire to know what it symbolizes--it needs to come through the physical body to be known, a fact inherent in all sacred architecture. The diagram below is from Robert Lawlor's "Sacred Geometry" and is a diagram of the succession polygons as they arise out of unity (represented by the circle) | 2011 Symbolic Process Students: Please post photos of your symbol work, with a description of media. This will enable others to see the process (you may share with friends) and allow ML to gather images for future classes. Please post only those images you are willing to have used as examples for other students. |
